I’ve now been nomadic for 4-days, and what a 4-day it has been!
We left out on Thursday and immediately headed down to Miami to visit with a high school friend of Chris. The traffic heading south added a good 2-3 hours to our anticipated journey, putting us a bit behind schedule. I got in touch with our West Palm Beach contact and discovered he was feeling under the weather anyway – so we re-routed our plans to have our first overnight in the driveway of Chris’ friends place. Woo-hoo.. nomads going with the flow!
We had a nice evening of hanging out and going to a live recording of a local rock band, followed by decadent chocolate cake. And early-ish wake up on Friday – we tooled around Miami for a bit seeing places Chris frequented, and then took off across the Everglades via the Tamiami Trail. As we approached the west coast of Florida, we noticed a scenic drive up to I-75 and decided to take it. The road quickly changed to a dirt road covered with pot-holes, giving us a great opportunity for a full ‘shakedown’ test of our packing skills. The road took us through thick hammocks which were really quite gorgeous, and then dumped us into an abandoned suburban project of Golden Gate Estates, which has become the Picyuane State Park. Miles and miles and miles of abandoned roads for as far as the eye can see. What is it with Chris and I finding these abandoned suburban projects? Fun, indeed.
Our scenic drive proved to be about a 3 hr detour, but very worthwhile. Once we hit I-75, we made our way to Havana, FL (just north of Tallahassee) for our weekend with the Dogpile tribe – arriving around 3am. We were greeting with lots of hugs and beer.. woo-hoo! Nathaniel and Kym were ubercool folks, nomads who came across this great land in north Florida who welcome other nomads. Saturday evening, they had about 40 people come out to the property for a huge party, using us as an ‘excuse’ (I hardly think they really needed an excuse for a party!). There was fires and drumming, and I spun fire for folks – which seemed most appreciated.
