The remainder of our summer plans are starting to take form, in part thanks to one of Cherie’s clients booking a training class in DC in mid-July.
Our general plans are looking something like this:
now – June 30 : Northern Indiana, including a trip up to South Haven, MI for Lakes of Fire Regional Burning Man Event
July 1 – July 6: Meander towards Philadelphia, potentially dipping into Canada
July 7 – July 12: Visit friends in the Philadelphia area
July 13 – 15: DC Area
mid July – mid August: Cross country adventure back to California, route undetermined
August 28 – September 9: Black Rock City for hosting Camp Nomadia at Burning Man

Hi cuties!
We LOOOOOOOOOOOVE your lil Olly trailer! We are thinking about buying a trailer and was trying to decide which one (casita vs oliver, etc) but it doesn’t seem like the Olivers are very easy to find to check one out. Anyways, we would love to meet you guys and your cute trailer (and we want to bring one to the playa too and curious about your experience with Orion!) if you happen to be in the Bay area…..Please let us know!
good juju to you!

Hi Sandra & Rick..
We’re actually headed to the Bay Area now, and should be there by mid-August. We’d love to meet up and show you our trailer! Are you heading to the playa this year? We’ll be out there then too at ‘Camp Nomadia’. Orion did fabulously last year on the playa – we were out there 12 days and we had people coming up at the end asking when our trailer was ever going to get dirty π
Keep in touch.. and hopefully we can meet up in a couple weeks either in CA or on the playa.

I’m not real familiar with the Liberty’s transfer case, but I’m going to assume it’s at least similar to the Wrangler. Most likely, you’ve bound up the select lever rods. The select lever you pull to activate 4WD is supposed to move two metal rods that connect to the transfer case. Those rods activate the various 4WD modes. If the rods aren’t lined up with the select lever correctly, you’ll end up pushing them against each other or otherwise binding them up when you try to shift modes. Most often this is caused because you managed to move the transfer case. Check the bottom of the liberty. If it’s like a Wrangler, there’s a fairly large metal plate that the t-case and transmission rest on. There are probably 4 bolts in the middle of the plate. If it looks like they’ve been moved (they are mounted thru slots, not holes), that’s likely the issue. Or, if it looks like the plate has a huge dent or has been crushed, that can have the same effect. If it’s the bolts that are the issue, loosen them SLIGHTLY, then use a ratchet strap to pull the entire thing back into place. Retighten. If it’s a bashed plate, get a better one and find a club or shop willing to fix it. π

Thanks for the tips – I’ll look under the LIberty today.
I sure hope it isn’t anything that can be attributed to external damage… If there is expensive work to be done, I’d rather let the extended warranty handle it.
I find it interesting that 2wd, 4wd-part time, and 4wd-full time modes all work fine. Only 4wd-lo is blocked. Does this sound typical of the sort of damage you described?

I just realized that our off-road club will be having an wheeling class the weekend after Cherie’s class. If you guys can hang out in the DC area for a few extra days, you’re welcome to join us at a campground (no hookups) with our club and wheel the Liberty (we’ll make sure you and it are well taken care of). You’re also welcome to hop in other rigs for some of the tougher trails that you don’t want to subject the Liberty to. Good food, three days camping and wheeling, good friends… what more could you ask? July 17th-19th, let me know if you’re interested. π

This sounds very fun. I had a great time doing the Jeep trail in Arizona, and I wouldn’t mind learning some more advanced skills and particularly more about maintenance and repairs.
One thing you might have some advice on… Last week at the Gateway Burn I was able to get our Jeep and trailer up a steep muddy hill just fine using 4wd high, but no matter how I tried or how hard I pulled our Liberty would not shift into 4wd low mode.
I’ve tried again since, and 4wd low seems to be locked out.
I’ve never had this problem before.
Any tips before we take her in to get looked at?
