Oh, what a dream a laptop lifestyle seems to be.
Grab your electronics, find a beach with good wireless bandwidth and spend the day with an amazing office view, scantly clad beachcombers, sounds of waves lapping up on the shore and perhaps a fruity tropical drink by your side.
All while getting actual work done, and making your desk bound colleagues envious.
My clients often ask when they call if I’m working from the beach today, but I actually never have – despite having a life designed to do so for decades.
We decided to actually take the fantasy to reality this week. We put on our swimsuits, fully charged up the tech, grabbed a beach blanket and headed to a beach we had discovered with excellent 3G signal to tether an iPhone from.
It started out as a lovely day. Taking breaks for a swim in the crystal clear waters of Francis Bay on the north shore of St. John, while getting caught up on various projects. Something so awesome about sand between your toes, a great view and great connectivity.
It should be a technomad’s paradise.
However, we quickly discovered that the reality of working from the beach is much like the fantasy of sex on the beach.
It’s better in theory than in practice.
Sand just ends up in ports where you don’t want it.

LOL point well taken. Those “ports’ can be a distraction!

Used to have the same problem w/ sand back when I was having sex on the beach, so I can totally see the problem. I stick w/ Kindle for reading and the water for romping π

It is for this exact reason that I bought an iPad instead of a MacBook Air. Try working at the top of Ram Head sometime — I used to do that a lot when I lived on the Coral Bay side. Great reception up there, fabulous view, cooling breezes (well, that works better in summer than now), and no sand!

Hadn’t thought about Rams Head being an option, just assumed since we haven’t gotten reception at Salt Pond Bay we wouldn’t further on. But would make since. Will definitely have to check that out! Are you still on island?
We also do have an iPad, and Chris had much better luck with the sand than I did that day π
Fiona Russell says
Salt Pond reception comes and goes, but on Ram Head you’re high up enough to get the signal straight from the mountaintop. Highly recommended. I’m still on island but no longer out east. π

LOL, too funnY! Ain’t that the truth about fantasy and reality. Sometimes the two just don’t mingle π
Cherie @Technomadia says
Or sometimes they mingle and create a memorable story π

The iphone is the only tech gear we ever bring to the beach…sand gets EVERYWHERE matter how hard to try to contain it!
Cherie @Technomadia says
The iPad also worked pretty well at the beach too. Don’t think we’ll be taking the laptops in the future tho.
Cathy says
Sooo needed that laugh! Thanks. π
Cherie @Technomadia says
*grin* Glad to share the laughter.

So did your ports survive? π
Cherie @Technomadia says
Ports intact π

It is still so AWESOME that you are living a life that allows you this option. A man has not truely lived until he has gotten sand in his ports!
Cherie @Technomadia says
Or woman… π
Dixonge says
still – it’s kinda one of those things you just *have* to try – like the mile-high club, or sex in the bathroom using the sink……
or maybe that’s just me….
Cherie @Technomadia says
Oh agreed.. don’t regret having tried. But for sure, good reminder that often times the fantasy and anticipation outweighs the reality of the experience. Once is great, but strongly suspect the novelty would wear off.
Christy @ Technosyncratic says
LOL! It’s true that some things are just better left as fantasies. π
Cherie @Technomadia says
Ya never know until you try tho, right? π
Just checked out your blog.. awesome to encounter other technomads! *cheers* to ya three.
