Oh goodness, it seems like we just pulled into Cape Blanco to begin this lighthouse host adventure. How quickly four weeks goes by.
We spent our last scheduled week trying to pack in as much awesome as we could – which is easy in a place where just sitting around is pretty darn awesome.
Work Life
Aside from serving our 17 hrs a week giving tours, which hardly feels like work at all, we’ve been busy workwise too.
First up, with iOS7 just released and Coverage? in need of its regular map updating, we spent a few days getting an update submitted to the App Store. It turned out to be a bit more work than anticipated given some recent changes by some of the major carriers causing us to have to change our map creation approach. And while we were at it, we gave Coverage? a quick iOS7 user interface make-over. The update is now available!
We’ve also begun initial work on a couple new app ideas, that we hope to have out by the end of the year, and been working on a major refresh to our No Excuses: Go Nomadic book and series. On top of our own projects, we’ve been fielding several inquiries for custom app development and consulting to see if they are fit for our current ‘kinda on sabbatical’ status.
Social Fun!
But what could be even better than amazing sunsets, lighthouse views and coastal living? A very full social calendar!
One of the benefits of being still for a bit and publicly announcing it, is people come to us! And this week has been abundant.
Ok, let me see if I can remember all who stopped in over the past week or so. Gamers on the Road, a family who hit the road recently, joined up with us – and we thoroughly enjoyed getting our gamer geek on with them. And Facebook follower David and his wife passed through on their inaugural coastal RV trip and spent an evening hanging out and sharing in wine.
We also had not one, but TWO, surprise fellow full timing bus nut stop ins. Ed & Stevi, who have been on the road for over 10 years now, stopped by in their MCI 5A. And then coming back from a hike we heard the sweet sound of a 2-stroke signaling the arrival of the The Hollands, a traveling musical family.
Hooray for spontaneous evening campfires with great nomadic conversations!
And then there’s the serendipity that happens out on the trails, where we randomly met Greg & Amelia while whale watching – a young couple who just hit the road in their Airstream a few months ago. They didn’t know of us beforehand, and were in the midst of trying to figure out how to make a nomadic lifestyle sustainable. Talk about perfect timing,
Whew, all that makes for a crazy busy social week… but wait, there’s more.
We’ve also been soaking up every moment we can with Nina & Paul. It has really been beyond fabulous being neighbors & co-hosts with these guys this month, and we have enjoyed so much quality time connecting. After years of blog stalking each other, its so good to take the friendship to real time.
And then …
A couple of huge storms hit the Pacific Northwest this weekend.
The last two of our scheduled shifts at the lighthouse were canceled due to needing to close down for high winds. As exciting as it was to be part of shutting the lighthouse down in 50-60 mph gusts, we were already lamenting that our time here was coming to an end way too soon.
But just moments before we shut the lighthouse down, the ranger visited and asked if we had plans for October? One of the incoming hosts had just canceled.
Perfect! We actually had no firm plans, and were already contemplating sticking around Cape Blanco a few extra days until we came up with a direction to head other than Sacramento by the end of the month.
So… we’ve agreed to fill in as lighthouse hosts for at least another week, if not two. So bring it on Cape Blanco, we’re not leaving yet!

What a fantastic surprise to meet you kinfolk! Thank you for inviting us into your home and sharing story with us. Hope to connect again down the line!

Hope you two have an awesome bonus 2 weeks in Cape Blanco, even though you’re going to be there without us (boo hoo). See ya soon!

Do you write for Android? I need an app. My new app would let me type in where I am, where I’m going and tell me what the weather is doing between here and there. Then I would not have to suffer with minimal bandwidth checking all of my way points to know what to expect. It would not be graphics intensive, and would load quickly out in the boonies.

Great idea for an app… but we only do iOS development ourselves. Check to see if it already exists however, often times great ideas already do 🙂 I know that feature is included in some GPS navigation apps and devices already.
I also just update my weather app with all of the upcoming cities along our path so I can keep an eye on them. Apple’s weather app makes this easy, and I can check it with one finger swipe. Does Android have something similar?

Not an app, but Weather Underground has a road trip/weather planner on its website. Go here: http://www.wunderground.com/roadtrip/

Ooo yes, that is a great resource! Thanks a bunch for posting it.
